I recently was able to attend “Tastes of Waverly Place” where I was able to sample the restaurants and check out some foodie stores in Waverly Place. Waverly Place is located in Cary, and there are restaurants that are familiar staples as well as some new faces to the scene. I was so honored to be able to try out different food and meet the chefs and owners behind it.
Our first stop was Famous Toastery. This restaurant serves breakfast and lunch with a unique service style. You do not just get your own waiter but instead everyone serves you and makes sure you are taken care of. I really loved trying the blueberry stuffed French toast and the Bellini was, of course, such a nice touch.
Our next stop was vomFASS, which is a store specializing in oils, vinegars and spices. Good oils and balsamic vinegars are something I like to splurge on, because they really make a difference when cooking. We were treated to some amazing bruschetta with balsamic vinaigrette, and since I pretend that I am Italian by marriage, this was a big deal. This would be a great store to buy a gift for your foodie friends too!
We moved onto Whisk Quality Kitchenware, which is locally owned. They have everything your kitchen would dream of wanting. This place is great when you might be looking for that kitchen tool you always wanted or if you want to take one of their baking or cooking classes. We were treated to a truly too-beautiful-to-eat shrimp ceviche. I would recommend booking out one of their cooking classes in advance because they fill up quickly and they have guest chefs from places like NYC to teach you! How fun!
Then we went to TASU Asian Bistro and they treated us like kings and queens. I literally could not believe how much food they put out for just a “sampling” of the restaurant. I am definitely not complaining. They are known for their sushi, but their other items are just as delicious to me. I loved that wontons were at the table waiting for us. Wontons are just one of the tastiest things on an Asian menu. I also enjoyed their orange chicken and their vegetable spring rolls are made in house every morning.
Our next restaurant was Gonza Tacos Y Tequila, which I know is some people’s favorite place and I am so stoked that they have one in Cary now. Immediately when I walked in, I fell in love with the atmosphere. It has such pretty artwork and décor and all the large windows in the restaurant can open so you can really have that indoor/outdoor feel. The chef was so nice and you can really tell that he loves what he does. We were greeted with watermelon margaritas and then we were served Mahi Mahi ceviche which was simply bursting with flavor and so refreshing.
We then headed to Enrigo Italian Bistro and being married to an Italian, it was so easy for me to fall in love with this place. One of the owners is from southern Italy and everything is made in house, including the pasta. My favorite items that I tried were the Fiocchi Quattro Formaggi and the Tiramisu. These two were so satisfying and would be my meal of choice when I come back.
Then we went to Fresca Café & Gelato. They served us crepes, chai and sorbet. I absolutely loved the chai and I challenge you to go here as soon as possible to try the sorbet! Okay, chai is amazing and it makes me so happy because it reminds me of fall and the holidays. The chai was so creamy and there is not a question that I will order this again. So, I really surprised myself because I never order sorbet ever! I am always a creamy gelato, custard or ice cream person but this strawberry sorbet I had has my heart now. They use a ton of fruit to make there sorbet and that is what helps make it so creamy, smooth and sweet, and it is made in house every morning!
Then we came to Triangle Wine Company, which is known for their great selection and affordable prices. They also have a lot of local beverages that you might not easily be able to find in your grocery store. Another thing that is great about this store is that they have free wine tasting almost every Friday and Saturday. What a fun idea for a date night?
A newer place that has opened in Waverly Place is called, Kale Me Crazy. They specialize in juices, smoothies, acai bowls and they have wraps and salads as well. We were able to sample “The Painkiller” wellness shot that contains ginger, lime, turmeric and raw honey. This gives you the perfect jolt of energy when you are not in the mood for drinking a whole cup of coffee.
I think I was way too excited to go to our next stop but I think anyone would agree that going to Gigi’s Cupcakes is sure to put a spark in you. Many of you are probably familiar with this tasty bakery but some facts to share are that everything is made from scratch and with love every morning at 4 AM. Also, they do weddings! They can do a wedding cupcake stand for you or a traditional wedding cake too. We were able to try quite a few of the flavors and honestly there was no “bad” choice. They were all SO good but what stood out to me the most was the “Kentucky Bourbon Pie” cupcake. It’s like a pecan pie and cupcake made a baby and there is bourbon in almost the whole thing, including the cream cheese frosting, but it is not overbearing at all. I love this cupcake and I do need to get another one soon.
So our last stop is a personal favorite of mine and I am pretty sure I fell in love with it all over again. Taziki’s Mediterranean Café is a combination of Mediterranean, fresh and healthy, and outstanding flavor into one. This place has something everyone would enjoy. I was able to taste various items that were great, including the chicken salad and the pork & tomato chutney aioli tartine. But what has my heart is the beef & homemade horseradish tartine topped with Swiss. This tartine tasted like an upscale Philly cheesesteak, which everyone knows being from South Jersey that Philly cheesesteaks are rather important to me J. It was incredible! Also, the chef was one of the friendliest guys. He was knowledgeable and really helpful with everything. I cannot wait to eat here again.
Overall, the “Tastes of Waverly Place” food tour was such a great experience and I completely feel honored that I was able to partake and let my readers know about some food options that they can try out in the Cary area.
